Woodend’s Victoria Hotel will be the venue for another inspirational guest speaker for the first Birds of a Feather event for 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Media professional and transgender legend Julie Peters will be sharing her story at the lunchtime gathering next week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Julie worked at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation for 50 years and in her late 30s she became the first employee there to openly transition. This was at a time when there was little understanding around what it meant to be transgender, few role models or allies, and no organisational policies in the organisation to support her. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now in her 70s, Julie has had an interesting and varied career. As well working behind the scenes at the ABC, she is a doctoral researcher in public health and the anthropology of gender\/transgender, a teacher, sessional academic, cabaret performer, writer, parliamentary candidate and environmentalist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Organised by Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health\u2019s Country LGBTIQA+ Inclusion Program, Birds of a Feather offers the opportunity for adults who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex to come together in a safe and affirming space, to share stories and feel a sense of belonging. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
