A major project cost blowout has cast doubt over Anzac Day services at Mount Macedon Memorial Cross unless funds are raised by the month’s end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Unexpected structural challenges have tipped Mount Macedon Memorial Cross restoration expenses more than $200,000 over budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During construction, engineers discovered that the original footings did not align with the 1990 engineering drawings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Once exposed, it became clear that additional structural works were required to install the balustrade and reopen the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A new engineered solution has now been designed but has added more than $200,000 in unplanned costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mount Macedon Memorial Reserve Committee of Management now has a January 31 deadline to fund outstanding works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Without the funding, final safety works cannot proceed in time for Anzac Day services and public access will remain restricted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The committee is calling on the greater community to support the project through a Go Fund Me campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Outstanding works are required to complete the new balustrade and footings around the cross and finalise the restoration works to reopen the memorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Committee of management secretary Kate Medhurst said the cross has been a significant place of gathering for generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The Mount Macedon Memorial Cross is Victoria\u2019s second most significant war memorial and a deeply valued place of remembrance, reflection, and community pride,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“For generations, it has honoured all who have served our nation and continue to draw thousands of visitors each year, particularly on Anzac Day and Remembrance Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Thanks to strong community support, government grants, and local fundraising, essential restoration works have already been completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“These include major repairs to the cross foundations, drainage improvements, new lighting, safer access pathways, erosion control, and detailed heritage and engineering assessments. These works have ensured the long-term stability of the memorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“This memorial belongs to all of us. With community support, we can ensure the Mount Macedon Memorial Cross is reopened in time for Anzac Day 2026, standing strong as a place of honour, safety, and remembrance.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
