Kyneton marathon runner, Greg Wilson, broke a record at the Two Bays Trail Run recently, a 56km feat across the Mornington Peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 73-year-old completed the marathon in approximately 6 hours, 36 minutes, 35 seconds, breaking the race’s previously held record for males above 70, by about 56 minutes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said training on grass and refraining from bitumen had helped sustained his longevity in competing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The first day after the event I can hardly walk. On the second day, I’m usually worse, but by the third day I’m usually fine,” Mr Wilson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He’s already preparing for his next race, which will be a six-day ultramarathon in Christchurch, New Zealand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Given his age, Mr Wilson is often chasing after records set by Cliff Young, the famous ultramarathon runner who became notable for his unexpected win at the inaugural Sydney to Melbourne Ultramarathon, in 1983 at 61 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“There’s no way I’m beating Cliffy’s Australian record at NZ Ultra, but running 612km will get me above his second best run,” Mr Wilson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The six-day race begins March 30 and continues to April 5.
