Victoria has become sadly familiar with the random attacks on women, and the predictable ineffectual responses that follow. If collective concern and good will stopped violence in Victoria, this would be the most peaceful place on earth.
\nUnfortunately, the fact that the assaults keep happening proves that candlelight vigils don’t make much difference. And anyone who wants to defend themselves can be arrested for carrying pepper spray or a taser.
\nThis week, my colleagues on the crossbench of the Victorian upper house are going to test the waters with a motion supporting the removal of restrictions on non-lethal means of self-defence.
\nI believe individuals should have both the right and the means to defend themselves.
\nIf your representative opposes this motion they need to be asked: why do you oppose it, and if you oppose it, what practical thing are you doing to prevent more violence?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
