Local author and illustrator, Trace Balla is set to launch her latest book Treeshape <\/em>\u2013 <\/em>the shape of a tree, the shape of me <\/em>as part of the 2026 Castlemaine State Festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The book launch and a sold-out workshop will take place at the Phee Broadway Theatre this Saturday March 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An extraordinary, inspiring and hope-filled graphic novel from the multi-award winning creator of Rivertime<\/em>, Rockhopping<\/em>, Landing with Wings<\/em> and Leaf-light<\/em>, Trace Balla\u2019s stunning memoir reveals her personal and life-changing experiences of place, her understanding of the natural world and her relationship to Country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Ever since I was a kid my favourite place has always been up a tree \u2013 where everything I notice feels like a part of me. Every birdsong, every leaf\u2019s light, every butterfly\u2019s dance … “<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This beautiful new book uses a mixture of photography and cartooning and tells the story of young Trace\u2019s awakening to the preciousness of the environment, including her participation in the protests against uranium mining at Jabiluka in the 1980s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Channelling her gift for visual storytelling, Trace reveals emotional truths, shares her commitment to environmental activism, highlights trees that have been meaningful in her life, and explores her deep appreciation of place and connection with First Nations peoples. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With its delicate artwork, heartfelt storytelling and timely themes of compassion and environmental care, this graphic novel will resonate with readers of all ages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trace said Treeshape<\/em> was about standing up for what we believed in, being led by First Nations peoples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It includes senior Djaara Elder Uncle Rick Nelson and local scar trees, and Yorta Yorta Aunty Kath Coff and Uncle Rick Nelson at Me Mandook Galk \u2013 the ancestor tree, right here on Djaara Country,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trace said that on a personal level, it had only been a few years since she was diagnosed as neurodiverse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I\u2019ve found myself amongst others on a hugely positive learning curve. It\u2019s been interesting to look back at my life while working on the book, and notice how much my neurotype has shaped who I am,” she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new offering has received high praise with fellow artists,writers and creatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goanna singer\/songwriter Shane Howard says, “Treeshape is brimming with humanity and bursting with the wholesome imagery and folk wisdom that magnify the small details of life \u2013 a generous act of love from a rare Australian artist.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The launch event will take place from 10.30am. All are welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
