It’s a little natural jewel, easy walking distance to the centre of Castlemaine, and right under residents’ noses.
\nBut many locals don’t even realise the Kaweka Wildflower Reserve is there say the dedicated committee members who help look after it.
\nKaweka Wildflower Reserve is an L-shaped 2.5-hectare parcel of conserved bushland that was presented to the community for public enjoyment by owner at the time, Don McCrae.
\n“He presented it in memory of his mother who loved wildflowers,” says today’s Committee of Management president Judith Tregear.
\nRight now the committee is extending an open public invitation to attend its upcoming triennial general meeting.
\nThey’re also keen to welcome new members to enjoy and help care for the reserve that’s rich in natural heritage including native flora and fauna.
\nCurrent committee members like Judith and treasurer Susan Green say those who attend the meeting can expect to find a friendly, nature-loving bunch of people – and no pressure to join the committee at all.
\n“We’d welcome new members and they can come to the meeting even if they don’t want to be on the committee,” says Susan whose love of this unique little sanctuary relates also to the love her late father, artist Douglas Green, had for the place.
\nJudith too has very strong personal memories of countless walks enjoyed there with her late husband.
\n“It’s a beautiful place to just go to be in the natural world and it’s for the people of this district,” Judith says.
\n“It’s a treasure.”
\nThere have now been over 50 years of community management of the reserve, with the committee meeting just four times a year so it’s not a huge burden, Susan says.
\n“In recent years we’ve had grants that have allowed us to erect our beautiful gateway arches and generally maintain the little park.”
\n“And we do plantings every year of indigenous plants,” Judith says.
\nNext month’s meeting is set for 5.30pm on Thursday, March 5 at the reserve’s Turner Street entrance – with contingency plans for wet weather.
