{"id":7940,"date":"2021-04-19T13:24:06","date_gmt":"2021-04-19T03:24:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.midlandexpress.com.au\/?p=7940"},"modified":"2021-04-19T13:24:06","modified_gmt":"2021-04-19T03:24:06","slug":"protection-money-pays-off","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/centralvic.com\/midlandexpress.com.au\/sports\/2021\/04\/19\/protection-money-pays-off\/","title":{"rendered":"Protection Money pays off"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 2021 Massey Ferguson Woodend Cup was won by Ballarat-trained galloper Protection Money on Saturday.<br \/>\nIt was the five-year-old\u2019s fifth win from 18 starts, and he had not raced since last October.<br \/>\nTrained by Nigel Blakiston, Protection Money started as an $8.50 chance as his best form had been over longer distances than the 1875m<br \/>\nat Kyneton.<br \/>\nRidden by Neil Farley, who came from England to ride and work here in 2018, Protection Money was allowed to settle back in the field, but moved up to third place near the 400m mark.<br \/>\nHe continued to run on strongly and beat the well-fancied Lorente by just under a length, with outsider and topweight Thunder Cloud in third place.<br \/>\nThe Woodend Cup was the feature event on Kyneton and Hanging Rock Race Club\u2019s eight-event program.<br \/>\n<strong>LOCAL WINNER<\/strong><br \/>\nKyneton trainer Mick Sell was pleased with the effort of Magnum Bullet, an impressive winner in a 1212m Maiden Plate for three-year-olds.<br \/>\nRaced by a large number of stable clients, Magnum Bullet showed ability in his previous six runs, and had a fourth and fifth placing at his home track to his credit.<br \/>\nBy Magnus from Silesia, Magnum Bullet was a $9.50 chance and showed he has matured since going for a spell in mid-December.<br \/>\nMagnum Bullet delighted connections by winning from 1.8 lengths for the George Osborne-trained gelding Delightful Journey, who should show improvement from the experience gained under race conditions.<br \/>\nThe punters who decided to take the local gallopers in a quinella received a handsome $79.50 payout.<br \/>\nCraig Robertson had the winning ride.<br \/>\nApprentice Laura Lafferty took riding honours with a double, winning aboard The Turffinator and Sleek Acheeva.<br \/>\nMornington-based trainers Amy and Ash Yargi took training honors with a double.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7942\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7942\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7942\" src=\"http:\/\/54.253.242.233\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/WoodendCup-2-Website-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/centralvic.com\/midlandexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/WoodendCup-2-Website-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/centralvic.com\/midlandexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/WoodendCup-2-Website-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/centralvic.com\/midlandexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/WoodendCup-2-Website.jpg 1013w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7942\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Impressive: Magnum Bullet wins the Ken Ponton Maiden Plate at Kyneton.
