There was plenty of elation in the Gisborne area last week as teenage star Flynn Lakey won the NAB League\u2019s Morrish Medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lakey played nine matches with the Calder Cannons this season in between some senior matches with Gisborne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ball-winning midfielder was best afield three times with the Cannons, and finished with 12 votes to shared the prestigious medal with Greater Western Victoria\u2019s big man Josh Rentsch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Both were named on the interchange bench in the NAB\u2019s team of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Flynn\u2019s father, Marty, was a star player and Flynn has inherited similar attributes, being a prolific handballer and kick gatherer around the midfield and on the ball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a big of a shock. I didn\u2019t really think about it too much at all,\u201d Flynn said after the realisation sunk in he would share the Morrish Medal, won by many players who have later made a name for themselves at the top level.

Beginning his football as a seven-year-old, Flynn played over 100 matches with Gisborne Rookies, and represented the RDFNL at U13, U14 and U15 levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gisborne\u2019s senior women\u2019s team captain, Claire Bourdon, has finished third with 17 votes in the Essendon District Football League\u2019s division one best and fairest count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An outstanding midfielder, Bourdon was instrumental in the Bulldogs\u2019 success in 2021.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
