James Hynson has channelled his boundless energy into golf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Gisborne man is not letting disability get in the way of embracing a pastime good for the mind, body and soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For the past year, James and his community support person, Sam Santo, have taken to Woodend Golf Course every Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
James says it’s his goal to build his skills to play in the club’s weekly competition. He is also keen to one day take a golf cart for a spin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Described as “larger than life”, James has made it his mission to get to know fellow players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sam said the golf trips all began when James’s dad gave him an old set of golf clubs to try.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“It has turned into so much more. James absolutely loves coming to the golf club,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“It’s great that the club has been so welcoming.”
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sam said the golf club had welcomed another client who enjoys volunteer work in recycling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Woodend Golf Club secretary Barney Hearnden said the club welcomed all members of the community whether they were there to play golf or just enjoy the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Friendliness is something we cherish as a core value at the club,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We have some members who just like to be on the course for the social aspect and enjoy watching while their friends play a game. We’ve got a great community asset here and we want to share that with everyone.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Barney said there were still some safety works to be completed around the club including a revamp of the kitchen, changes to the bathroom facilities and a ramp to improve access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said Macedon Ranges Shire Council had a plan to make it safe for the community by June next year. A longer-term plan would consider further upgrades or a complete new facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
